Anecdote of the Day: Negative Double Positive
Based on a true story:
An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day. “In English,” he said, “a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn’t a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative.”
A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”

Of course it’s important how you say it. A great example of this:
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
- I Didn’t Say You Stole My Money.
Playing with the language can make us realize the importance of (good) communication. Verbal interaction between human beings is the very foundation of our nature as an intelligent race, know that, live (speak) with that in mind and your ability to effectively communicate with others will be dramatically increased.
